Hi,

I'm 14 and there's been a huge lump in my mouth for about the past month. I got it checked out by the walk in doctor once I noticed it. I haven't really notice it growing in my mouth, I just saw it appear, its really big and hurts when I swallow. The walk in dcotor sent me to see a specialist and igot 2 xrays done. At the specialist he sent me to do an ultrasound of my thyroid and it came out good. He was about to send me to a surgeon to do the biopsy, but then decided to put me on medication for 10 days (I was put on Amoxin) . Ten days afterit showed no signs of working so he sent me to a surgeon for that biopsy (this is where I'm scared). It is on Monday, the lump is at the back of my tongue on the right side, I do not smoke or drink. Specialistsad that it doesn't look like tongue cancer. I am wondering how the surgeon is going to do the biopsy on me...you can't see the lump unless I stick my tongue out fully. Also, the specialist said that I will be put to sleep for this procedure... I am really scared, so how long will it take to heal? Will it hurt a lot afterwards? Would I need stitches? How long is the report going to take? How will the surgeon operate on me? Do you have a clue of what I might have? I'm sorry for making this so long, thanks for reading and please answer. Thanks to all. (:

  1. Hi, well I can see how that would be scary. But it is unlikely that it is cancer. No one can be sure until the biopsy, but as you stated so far the doc's have not found anything serious in any other exam or test so far. Thats good news. You mentioned that you don't smoke or anything, so thats good too! Although we are all going to die someday it is more likely that a person be hit by a bus than have oral cancer at age 14. So stop treating your life like your afraid to get hit by a bus.

I know your scared but you have already gotten the worst part over with. You are brave, it is normal to feel fear under these circumstances, but you won't be awake when they perform the biopsy. It won't hurt as bad as getting your ears pierced. Do you have pierced ears? It won't hurt as much as dental work. And you probably won't need stiches. This time in a few days it will all be behind you. The best thing you can do until then is continue to take good care of your self, Talk if you need to, and you can email me any time. I will pray for you every day. No matter what the outcome, everything will go better if you remind yourself your following your doc's recomendations, eating right, and you will get through this, and try to distract yourself when you can. God bless you.

  2. oh wow...

i dont think you need a biopsy at all tbh.

when i was about your age i believe, maybe younger, i got a lump which sounds a lot like the one you're describing, only my first one was underneath my tongue in the front on the left...it bothered me but it went away after a couple months... since then i have gotten a few more in random places in my mouth, none of which last as long. i am very healthy and hardly ever get sick or anything, i have no diseases or anything of the sort.

a lot of times i get the bumps after straining my mouth too hard when eating (i assume it something like that bc i get them most often after i eat) for instance when i eat something hard to chew and i REALLY have to work my mouth and the way the suction and saliva in your mouth work i think it just makes a little bubble, like a blister...

although yours may be different than mine (i have had them, er, ONE, on the back of my tongue before.)

they're very annoying and may hurt if i poke them the wrong way, and it feels weird to swallow if they're on or near my throat/back of my tongue.

...hope everything goes okay. good luck.
