Question:

Move from Classical Guitar to Electric Guitar?

Before I started playing the guitar, I was sure I wanted to play Electric. Many people told me that playing the Classical guitar or the Acoustic guitar before electric would help me acquire some necessary skills. Having a classical guitar at home, I chose to start with Classical. I have been playing for a while now, and I wonder what were these necessary skills I should have learned ( or was the entire idea of not strating electric a waste of time?).

If not, how will I know I am ready to move to Electric?

I know the move is supposed to be hard, but unlike most classical guitar players I played mainly chords, and less tabs etc.. (and all those spanish songs). Is this going to slow down my gaining of these skills that i need to acquire?

  1. I think it was wise to practice your guitar skills on you classical guitar (since you already have it). But to play the electric guitar properly and to be a real guitar player, you need to learn how to read tabs as well, not only chords. As long as you know the chords and how to read guitar tabs, and also your hand movements and stuff, you should be ready to play the electric guitar.

  2. the basic skills are universal to any guitar, the main difference between the nylon string and steel string guitars are string tension and spacing. the electric guitar has a narrower neck than a classical guitar, and is a lot easier to play than a classical or a steel string acoustic (imho)
