  1. It is a kind of 'trial' for Julia Roberts character to see if she has what it takes to look after her children when the cancer finally wins. Besides, imagine the movie if all was h****y dory from the start and they went out on family picnics etc. Movies need conflict otherwise its like watching a lame family home video.
