Question:

Movie night menu for someone who hates to cook?

my significant other and i have a tendency to be an old agoraphobic couple from time to time. we're partial to having movie nights - for example, most recently we watched Akira Kurosawa's "Ran" and had take-away from our favorite Japanese restaurant. future plans include Indian food and Baliwood, junk food and chick flicks (only in the fall and winter when i don't care about putting on extra weight that i'm working hard to take off), and French cuisine and Audrey Hepburn's "Funny Face".

i'm working on French night (i'm also adding "Amelie" to the movie roster) for this weekend because "minn einn og eini" has had a terrible week and i think me actually doddering about in the kitchen would cheer him up.

so my question is this - does anyone know of fairly easy French recipes? i've gone through multiple websites, but as i don't eat meat a lot of the staples are out. and i don't want to make six different types of crepes either. any vegetarian/vegan suggestions are extra-appreciated!

^8^

  1. french onion soup haha

look up the recipe its pretty simple, just get a good beef broth

  2. This is my favorite European food. The beer sets it off!

Beef carbonade is easy, but not vegertarian, Belgian actually, but close enough.

2lb beef for stew (chuck, cut into small pieces--ask the butcher)

    1.5 lb onion sliced thinly

    2 T Flour

    1/4 C oil

    2 bay leaves

    2 cloves garlic, minced

    2 C beef broth

12 oz beer (Chimay or Stella or an amber lager)

    Salt and pepper to taste

    Heat oven to 300 F.

Brown the beef in a dutch oven 1/3 at a time using 1 T oil on each batch. Remove and repeat till all is cooked.

Add the last T of oil and the onions and cook over med heat for about 10 minutes stirring about every minute.

Return beef to pan with any juice that has accumulated.

    Add garlic, cook 30 seconds

Add flour cook for 2 minutes

Add beer, broth and bay leaves

Cover pot with lid tilted for steam to escape

Place in oven for 2 hours

    Serve over egg noodles.

  3. How about a vegetable quiche?  It's easy when you buy the premade crust.  Some nice French wine, a cheese/cracker platter and fresh fruit sounds good to me!

I am impressed, even I cant sit through a 3hr+ Bollywood movie!!

  4. Hello =)

Ratatouille was the first thing to come to mind for your French night and maybe Pear Belle-Hélène for dessert.

You sound like a lovely couple that looks out for each other and has fun together, I wish you all the happiness in the world.

Edit: To add link for dessert
