Movie scene: boy drowning in pool?

So my friends and I cannot figure out which movie this scene is from:

An adult male has a flashback to when he was a child and his dad throws him into a pool and yells abuse to him to teach him to swim. The boy splashes around for a bit but ends up giving up and sinking to the bottom... he does get saved somehow but we fail to remember how...

It has been in Lost apparently but none of us watch Lost so it can't be that... It was also in Slaughterhouse Five but I've only read the book and none of us have seen the movie...

That happens in the beginning of The Shipping News with Kevin Spacey

It starts with him telling the story about his father throwing him in the water, and not helping him when he couldn't do it..   and how this started his road of not living up to his fathers expectations..   (they show the scene in flashbacks)
