  1. In the northern hemisphere, cold fronts tend to move in a southerly and easterly direction, as the cold air source is to the north.  Warm fronts tend to move north and east, with the warmer air usually pulled northward ahead of a low pressure system.

  2. Weather systems in general usually move to west to east due the rotation of the earth in the mid latitudes.  Near and just above the equator the winds move from east to west.  The trade winds.  The zone between these airmasses is called the ITCZ (Intertropical convergence zone).  Along which you will notice a lot of thunderstorms.   This process is reversed in the southern hemisphere.

Fronts can move northward over the US because you have an area of low pressure or a low pressure trough to your west.   Winds will move from the base of the trough to the top of the ridge.  These areas of high and low pressure are the highways that storm systems travel.   Once the winds reach the top of the ridge they descend down the ridge to the next area of low pressure...

  3. ok usually fronts move from west to east.  this is due to the natural flow of the jetstream that moves all weather fronts.  The jet stream is a wave of air (sort of like an ocean current) that spans the globe in a band...most fronts and systems move in reaction to pushes of the jet stream...however over the ocean it all depends on the ocean currents in regards to where fronts move
