Question:

Moving House Tips Please?

I am moving this week to a 120 year old house, with hubby, a 3 yr old toddler and a 5 month old baby. On top of that I am 4 months pregnant.

The house has not been occupied for 3 years, so there are plenty of spider webs, dust etc. Yesterday we started cleaning the room upstairs. Being extra particular for the cleanliness, we cleaned the windows, ceiling and walls. During the 3 hours we were there, we only managed one room and half the bathroom.

There is so much to do! We are planning on renting the rug doctor machine for the carpets from Tuesday afternoon till Thursday night. That means by today and half of the day tomorrow, I have to make sure that all the rooms upstairs and the dining room, living room and computer room are all done from ceiling to floor. My husband works from 7am-3pm, so that leaves me and my baby at the house (toddler lives with his mum half of the week).

That does not include the kitchen, laundry n garage yet

Anyone has any tips for moving. It is stressful!

  1. We must assume that you are not going to call a professional, so...

    1. label all the furniture with "mover's tags", your local professional mover will have these. Preferably, color code the tags to help you place everything in the proper room at your destination.

    2. Mark each carton as to where it goes and contents

    3. Take your time, don't get stressed out about things like your great-gramma's dresser. If it gets damaged, it can be repaired.

    4. Separate areas of responsibility...Your kitchen, his garage, etc.

  2. It is stressful but, you are doing things right. It is much easier to clean an empty house than cleaning it once all of your stuff is there. Do you have any friends in the area who might come and help for the Time Honored Tradition of Pizza for their good will? Also is there a Grandparent who can sit the baby while you clean? If not, well setting up a playpen and toys can help but, it is just going to take time.

Also, remember being when cleaning this up, it doesn't have to be PERFECT, simply clean. Sometimes we think that everything must be perfect and this leads to hyperfocus so setting a timer to do a given task can help you stay focused in simply getting it clean.

For wall washing, I like to get a wide car washing sponge...it works faster because, you are going over a wider area in one pass.

When moving. I like to pack by room and then write what room that box goes into so that the movers simply put it in the room it belongs in to begin with. That is my best tip.

  3. We`ve moved 18 times in 20 years. One golden rule, move mid week.If you have a problem with any of the utility companies you`ve got a couple of days to get it sorted. We moved on a weekend ,once, and spent 10 days without a phone and nearly lost a house sale.

One more thing,It`s your new home, enjoy the move and get as many people as you can to help,it can be FUN!

  4. Try the Dust Genie. I just moved out of my house in South Carolina and we a TON of dust. This was easy and really helped. (www.dustgenie.com)
