Moving Out for the First Time?

I am moving out next week in to my first apartment! I am so excited but am so nervous, like what if I don't like it? 6 month contract but I have to leave at some point but can always come home after...

The new place is only a few miles away and 10 minutes away in the car.

Does anyone have any tips or experiences at moving out of home?

  1. Don't worry, you'll like it.  Just remember to pay the bills on time and be clean.  You'll be responsible for paying for any major damages.

  2. Congratulations! You were lucky to get a 6 month lease! Most are one year long. The first apartment that I lived in was when I first got married, and I let my husband pick it out while I was out of town.... big mistake lol. It was a dump! But I learned soooo much while living there.

-Go over with some rubber gloves, Lysol, 409, paper towels, a broom, mop, and vacuum and go to town cleaning it. Maybe your mom will help you? They all say that they're "professionally cleaned" but that's a joke. They're never cleaned up to my standards. When we moved into this last place, there was pee in the toilet.... So yeah, get it **** and span clean before you move in.

-Spray for bugs before you move in! Even if you're the cleanest person in the world, apartments are notorious for having pests. And you never know how clean your neighbors are. Buy a can of Raid and some sticky pads and you'll be in good shape.

-Take inventory! If you notice anything broken or messed up, make a list and give it to your landlord. You certainly don't want to be blamed for the damage when you move out.

-Remember that noise travels. On one hand, it's just part of apartment life and some noise will just have to be tollerated. On the other hand, you're not paying to hear someone else's noise. If your neighbors are really loud (watching TV at 2 am, having loud parties, fighting, etc.) ask them (politely) to be a little quieter. And make sure you're not being too loud.

Those are the 4 biggest tips I can give you. Good luck with your new apartment! Enjoy!

  3. You have got to let go of those apron strings sooner or later. It will be a big change but as long as you think positive about it then it will work out!
