You know how when you do something for the first time, you usually make mistakes that you wouldn't have the second time? Well, I am moving out of the house for the first time soon and I need advice on what to keep in mind. I'm not looking for a specific answer, I just want to know some things you wish someone wouldn't told you before you went out into the world alone.

  1. Keep credit cards for emergencies only.  Live off cash.

Its okay to wait to get something until you save up enough to buy it.

Save 10% of everything you earn. It will give you the freedom to always be able to make the right decision at the right time.

Never, never, never let someone else control who your friends are, how you interact with your family or your finances.

If someone physically hurts you or lies to you, get away from them now.  Never believe they will change. They won't.  It's not your fault.

Never buy furniture you can't move yourself.  Rattan is good. Oak is bad.  LOL

If you are sexually active, use birth control all the time and make your partner do likewise.  Don't become a parent until you're ready to be a parent in your maturity and financially. You owe your kids that much.

It is possible to live on chicken pot pies and peanut butter when you have too.

Always remember, this too will pass.  As bad as things are at the moment, they will change and get better eventually.  Just hang in there.
