Question:

Moving and taxes?

Okay...so, I lived in FL.

...and moved to TN. However, have not filled out a change of address form because I am staying with my sister because I'm looking for a job to get my own apartment.

However, I'll have to change my address to my sister's for a small time after I get a job...and then when I get the money and find a place...change it AGAIN to MY place.

So, will I have to put my sister's address as a move as well?

So on taxes, would I say I moved from 123 Willow Ln, Dolphin, FL, 12345 to 123 Cherry Ave, Vandy, TN 12345 and THEN 123 Volunteer Blvd, Lala, TN 12345.

  1. Generally, you don't have to update your address.  The only time you really would have to is in the case of the stimulus check or if you actually use a tax book to file your return, then you might.  If neither of those applied, I wouldn't update your address.  Just wait and update your address when you file your taxes.

If you are expecting a w-2 or other tax forms from past employers, banks, etc. then you will probably want to let them know your address in like November or very early December.

  2. The only time that the in state moves would make a difference is if there were local taxes to be paid or you are looking for a stimulus or refund check.  If none of those apply don't worry about your address until tax filing time.

  3. The question is some what confusing.

My guess is that you aren't asking about a simple change of address. I am assuming that you are asking about moving expenses.

If my guess is right...then you will only report one move. To claim moving expenses you have to move at least 50 miles plus commuting mileage (not a problem FL to TN). The next test is time...employed 39 weeks.  There are some more ifs ands and buts...however, this should answer your question.

    Hope this helps.
