I'm Canadian, living in the US for 5 months. Got a job offer in Ontario so am moving back. I'll be u-hauling some furniture and personal belongings (all used, nothing new, my mother gave me). What can I expect at the border? Will I have to pay duty on these things?

Thank you.

  1. No, you won't be paying taxes for it. As long you don't get new items. And even if you do, unwrap the box, and pretend you always had it.

Just to let you know, you will be paying $65 for moving things across the border. It's just a fee.

  2. Your best bet is to contact a household mover that does international moves for customers, and they will be able to give you more details and info. When moving internationally, there are of course allowances made for the moving of personal effects and furnishings, but there may be limits.  If you can prove that you took them with you in the first place, you would not have to pay duty on them.  How did you get these things to the US in the first place ?
