Me and my partner have lived in the Uk all our lives.

When i found out i was pregnant, i came to Canada to stay with parents and had the baby here....she is registered in Canada and everything...

When i go home, do i have to register her there as well? As she is obviously English as her parents are, and we plan to live there too.

What about the birth certificates etc..?

She currently has a canadian birth certificate..is she able to get an english one?

I just need to know what i need to do when i get home.

Thanks for any help

  1. If you are a UK citizen, your baby is entitled to UK citizenship.  Register the birth at the nearest UK consular office or consular division of the UK Embassy/High Commission.  Bring your proof of citizenship, baby's birth certificate, birth hospital records, passport photos, etc, and baby with you when you go & apply for a UK passport for baby.  She keeps the birth certificate whe was born with -- make sure the parents' citizenship is recorded on the birth certificate.  Do this BEFORE you go home so you have no immigration problems with baby!  Baby will enter on her UK passport.

  2. You should register the child at a British Embassy or consulate before leaving Canada. The child should also have both Canadian and British passports. It is basically a technicality but to make things easier the child should enter the UK with a British passport. Otherwise you could be in for extra paperwork!
