Moving cross country, what's cheapest way to ship furniture, books, and stuff?

I don't need stuff right away so it doesn't matter if it arrives late, I just don't want to pay $1500 for "professional" movers to damage my furniture and sentimental things.

  1. Have you checked with U-Haul, you can leave with the trailer behind your car, take it to your new location and drop the U-Haul there at one of their offices

  2. It will take a few phone calls, but talk to smaller, independent companies and tell them you would like to 'consolidate'.  They will phone other movers and put your shipment together with others going to the same area of the country.  It can save a lot of money.

  3. i drive for united van lines and i will tell you- you get what you pay for, go ahead ship it the cheap way, you'll learn what "unproffesional means". $1500 is cheap for a cross country relocation, i filled my fuel tanks today, $960 dollars for 200 gallons, that will get me 1100 miles. hope your move goes well.
