  1. I have taught 5th and 6th both.  Here they are both part of elementary school.  Middle school starts in 7th.

The difference with 6th graders is that they are at an in between age.  They aren't yet teens, but aren't little children anymore either.  They mature so differently and that makes teaching them challenging.

Since you have already taught 5th, the teaching part won't be that difficult.   The differences you will find is in dealing with the way 6th graders try to fit in.  Expect attitudes from the students as they are trying to find their own identity, but conform to those around them at the same time.

You may not have as much parental support on the middle school level. Students are also more involved in after school activities, so you may have problems dealing with homework.

You may be surprised to find out how much goes on sexually in a middle school, so be prepared.

These students need encouraging.  They need to know that someone cares about them and they are important for being who they are.  In your role as teacher also be a cheerleader for your students.  You are an important part of their life and you have a chance to change the way they see themselves.   Be patient, be understanding, be firm, and make sure the students know that you are in control of the class.
