  1. Does your friend have a green card, work visa, or student visa?  If not, he will need need to obtain one of those.  http://travel.state.gov/visa/visa_1750.h...

He'll also need to get ready for the shock of paying for health insurance, as it is significantly higher to pay out of pocket for insurance (even with an employer paying a portion) in comparison to universal health care.  You'll also need to explain what a copay is, and explain that despite paying for health care, many things will not be covered 100%.

On a lighter note, he will also need to learn to drive much faster (I was just in Vancouver, they drive at a much more relaxed pace than Americans, I pray every time I get in my car since I moved from Toronto to Houston).

  2. Unless your friend is independently wealthy you can't just "move". And even if he or she is wealthy he can only stay for 6 months at a time.

If your friend needs to work to support himself, he or she will need the appropriate VISA. It's easier for a Canadian to get one than other nationalities (due to NAFTA), however he will still need to be sponsored by an employer. So if he doesn't have a job lined up already, his first course of action would be to find a company that would be willing to sponsor his employment in the US.

Of course he can come illegally. But if he get's caught, he will have to deal with the consequences. Contrary to popular believe not all illegal aliens in the US are Mexican, there are a fair amount of Canadians in the US illegally.

  3. First  they need to apply for a visa that would best suite the reason they're moving. For example if they're moving to work, they need to apply for a work visa. Just have them google the government site for immigration. It'll take like two mins to find. They can just call the immigration office and find out specifically what they need.
