Moving from Iowa to Kansas what do I do?

I was recently gifted a car from my future mother-in-law. She gave me the title, it is an Iowa Title.

I am moving to Overland Park, KS in a few days and I have no idea what I am supposed to do about this car when I move.

Do I need to do something with this Iowa title? Does it need to turn into a Kansas one? What about registration and insurance. It appears that to get the title and registration you have to have it insured. But when I went to insure it the insurance wanted the registration? I don't get that.

Also, I don;t have plates for it. Can I drive it without plates? Do I need to do this type of stuff before I move or after. And if the answer is after then do I need to file a title change in Iowa first? or can I just bring the signed title to the people in Kansas?

What do they mean by "inspection" that I seem to need before inspection in Kansas? I never have had to have my cars inspected for anything before.

My answer asumes you have another vehicle that is insured. Go to your insurance agent & have the agent call an agent from the same insurance company in KS. & have that agent write you a policy. Have your agent agent either make a proof of insurance from his / her computor or have your agent ask the other agent to fax one to him. Take the Proof of Insurance & the signed off title to a motor vehicle office & get a temporary permit. Regarding the vehicle inspection. It is an inspection to make sure everything on the vehicle is in working order. KS. may or may not require a vehicle inspection. The Motor Vehicle Office in KS. will inform you of their requiments.
