Question:

Moving from Toronto to Glasgow?

Hello,

I am 21 and live near Toronto, ON...I am planning on moving to Glasgow, UK in late fall of this year or early 2009...I was born in Airdrie but moved to Canada with my family when I was 3, therefore I have dual citizenship.

My main concerns are what areas are best to live in (but at the same time affordable and safe) how expensive is it (groceries, utilities, public transport, etc) and if there are a decent amount of jobs available.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

  1. I disagree with other 2 answers, Glasgow is an expensive place to live, I live in the outskirts and although i do work it is hard to find another job paying above the minimum wage of £5.52 per hour. I am a single older woman taking home £170 per week and from that it is £100 for rent and council tax, electricity is about £15 per week, leaving £55 for food and travel. It is over £1 for a loaf of bread, daily travel is £3. Glasgow has a lot of crime and currently too many immigrants taking jobs for less than the minimum wage. Houses are expensive to buy, a 2 bed house will cost about £120,000. Good luck.

  2. The best places to stay in Glasgow are the west end and the south side. There are plenty of jobs and plenty of grocer shops and it is not very expensive to live.

  3. I agree with Lucky Man 2, Glasgow is a good place to stay. Even Airdrie, Coatbridge area where you came from  is okay.  There are plenty of jobs and if you are looking to rent a property to stay in there are loads at reasonable prices.

    Good Luck

  4. Glasgow is a great place to live, it’s a thriving city and has been going through a “boom” period for years now and that will continue.

Glasgow is expensive to live in. There was a report out about 6 months ago that found the cost of living in Glasgow is higher than in New York, Los Angeles, Moscow and is the second most expensive place to live in the UK, London was first.
