How hard would it be for an american to gain citizenship to Ireland and move there?

  3. It depends on what your qualifications are.  Citizenship in any country is always going to be a long drawn out process (unless your Micheal Phelps :) )  no matter what country you're trying to get into.  

    It will probably take years to complete.  If  you want to come over here to work, 12 month work permit is relatively straightforward to organise IF you have a skilled job sorted out first.  So I'd recommend sorting that out first.
