  1. If you are happy to live some way out of central Perth, a 3 or 4 bedroom house will cost $300-450 per week in rent. The housing market is a little depressed at the moment, so if you have capital to buy a house its not a bad time to do so. However , plan on any reasonable house (3 bedroom or more) costing upwards of $300,000 in the fringe areas, increasing to $450,000 when you get within 20 km of of Perth business district.

Food, services etc.  will be hugely more expensive than you will have paid in India, but it will depend on what you wish to buy.

$80,000 is not a bad salary in Perth. However, many families have two incomes and jointly earn much more.

  2. The cost of living in Perth is rising, but that salary will be quite good if you are frugal and careful - government schools are reasonably good, depending on the area you choose to live, and will not cost you a great deal (fees are only about $60 per child, but you have other costs such as uniforms and excursions).

Fresh fish is very expensive, but your groceries budget for a family of four should not be more than about $250 - 400 a week, if you pack a school lunch for the kids from home.

Public transport will cost you about $8 to 10 a day if you commute to the city by train or bus. If you take your car parking will cost about the same.

Electricity, water and gas bills are not cheap, compared to what you are used to. Telephone and internet connection are also to be considered and depending on the companies you choose to deal with can be quite high so shop around.

Remember - the more research you do and the more informed you are the more money you will be able to save. Go to some of the websites below and make an estimate of what you will be likely to spend on groceries and cleaning products.

  3. You will find perth quite expensive as prices for housing and food costs have really jumped in the last few years. We lived in the hills near Perth and liked it quite a bit. I don't know if you have heard about the stamp duty over here on houses and cars. As I am an American  I was quite suprised by it as it ads thousands to the price of a home. There is also a rental shortage for properties so you have to look around . But we did enjoy our three years there.

  4. If your immigrating have a look at http://wa.gov.au/governmentservices/abou...

Be aware that if your only here short term, that because Australia does not have reciprocal medicare agreement with India, that you will also be up for total cost of emergency care, hospitals, pharmaceuticals etc.

Also you will pay more tax than a migrant. You will not have a tax free threshold.

Factor in these and your $80 K would not go very far at all.
