On the 1st of september 2008 i will be moving out of my property but going to live in Canada.

I know i have to let the council know about this i just want to clear some things up.

I am currently only renting the un-furnished property privately. When i move out who if anyone will have to pay council tax? Will the landlord have to pay anything when i leave despite nobody living there. I just want to get things clear incase he tries to say i must pay something even though i have left or if he says i owe money because he paid council tax when i had gone etc

Basically just the steps the council would take when a person has moved out.

Thanks

  1. Assuming you are giving up the flat when you leave, then it is the landlords responsibility for any council tax due after the date your lease ends. Inform the council of the date the lease ends so you won't be billed for time you didn't live there, and also tell them your moving out date, especially if it is earlier than the lease date, since it may affect how much you need to pay.

Of course, if you have any arrears due then those still need paid by you, but after your lease ends, then the landlord/next tenant will pay the tax.

  2. Hi

The best thing for you to do is contact the council now to say you will be moving out of the property and going abroad, so would like to get the payments sorted and to make sure your name is off the account by 1 Sept.

  3. Generally in England if the property is empty and not fully furnished the answer is no.

In Scotland it has to be completely unfurnished.

You would be safer if you checked with your local council or the Citizen's Advice Bureau because things might differ from area tom area.
