Moving in with your mate? What would you do?

If you're finally making the move with that special someone - what's ideal:

1) The woman moves in with the man (if he has a house or an apt and the woman is moving all of her stuff into his environment)

2) The both of you will move into a new place together and establish furniture, fixings and decorate everything together.

3) The guy moves in with the woman if she is already established and he has lived with roommates or parents/family members.

What are most couples doing nowadays and who gives up more when moving in with the other person?

  1. It all depends on what you are comfortable with and what makes the most sense. I moved into my fiance's apartment because my rent was going up and my roommate was leaving. His apartment was gross, but cheap and we were saving for a house. Think of things like this: Who has the nicer place? What can you afford? What is most convient to work or school? How long would you be there? Getting a new place together would be much more expensive (security deposits, application fee, utilities turned on/switched over) so i wouldn't do that unless this was going to be your home for a long time.

Deciding who gives up what is a great way to figure out how living together will work. It will be the first of many compromises. If it is something you can't agree on without fighting, then that is probably a good sign that you shouldn't be moving in together. Also, if you go into it thinking of his place/her place or his stuff/her stuff then you are setting yourself up for more problems.
