I'm moving into my apartment tomorrow and the landlord gave us a sheet to go around the apartment and write down all the pre existing problems so that when the lease is up we won't get anything taken out of our security deposit. What are things to check for?

  1. Borrow a video camera.  Much better than a check list (altho fill that out too).   The good landlords are a joy to work with.  The bad landlords will say that you "ruined" the carpet and charge you for new carpet.  Then they will not install new carpet and do the same thing to the next tenants.  The carpet is the usual trouble area.   I'm a good landlord and my tenants are happy.

  2. the walls, the floors, the blinds, any appliances

  3. Make sure all appliances work. Make sure all lights and plugins work.

My best advise is to just go down the check list and check everything. and if anything is damaged -TAKE PICTURES!!!!

  4. Inspection checklist:

  5. Take pictures of all walls, ceilings and floors and everything that comes with the apartments. A judge doesn't have time to look at a video and make sure the date prints out on the pictures.

  6. lights, electrical sockets, etc. radiators, water tanks, walls, doors, machines, etc.

    hope this helps
