Question:

Moving into haunted brothel..?

I am moving into a new flat, which is like 100s of years old, haunted (apparently), and used to be a whorehouse. My bedroom reflects this age, creepiness and dirtiness. So.. naturally I want to freshen it up a bit without breaking my student budget!

The walls are yellow (ewgh!) and kinda grubby/crumbly.

Is there anyway I can just prime and aerosol spray paint it? Or do I have to do it the old fashioned way? Alternatively I could put fabric on the walls with starch, which would be cheapest? I just want to get it neutral-looking (off white or beige or something!) so it goes with my furnishings, which are all nice and modern.

Any other ideas to bring it into the 21stC? thanks!

  1. The old fashioned paint and roller are going to be the cheapest way, Look for oops paint at the paint store. Oops paint is paint that was mixed to the wrong colour and the person buying the paint didn't want it. the paint stores sell it very cheap and you may be able to find a neutral colour you like.

  2. Don't spray paint it!  It's more expensive, not to mention the fumes in your room...

Check your local home improvement warehouse.  Sometimes they sell discounted buckets of improperly-colored paint mixed for previous customers, which is perfectly fine (so long as you don't mind the limited choice of colors).  Brush away If your walls are relatively smooth, use a 1/4" roller.  Roll it on with

For a neat, custom look--along with your idea of fabric... Cover sheets of Styrofoam with fabric to line the walls.  You can purchase 4' x 8' sheets of pink rigid home insulation foam (get the pink, not white, ask for it at Home Depot or your local home improvement store, they will know) and bulk fabric from a fabric store.  The foam is easily cut with a knife to fit your needs.  Use 3M spray adhesive (home depot) to apply the fabric to the plastic-coated side of the foam, and fold over any edges.

Thumbtacks make it into a huge bulletin board...

A haunted brothel?  Stay protected... ;-)

  3. I suspect answer #1 states the case clearly.

In not knowing how you know it's haunted, it may just be that the only thing that ever died there was someones dignity.
