Question:

Moving into my first apartment - what should I expect to pay?

I'm moving out of my parents' house within the next year. Maybe not the best idea - but it's what I want and I'm striving to make this work. I plan on moving to the Atlanta area to attend college and I would like to rent an apartment room (1 bedroom). What should I expect to pay and how much on average for each (utilities, etc.)?

  1. it depends on the area that you move into. I live in australia so i don't know what the apartment prices are like over in america

  2. I would be checking the classifieds for apts and where they are and what they include and then I would check around with friends who are in apartments as to what they pay for heat, light, cable, internet, parking, hot water. Some apartments include some of these things like parking and hot water but the rest you have to pay for yourself. You will quickly learn there was a reason why your parents always told you to turn the lights out. Also consider that you will have to pay for wash and your own clothes and beddings. You will need furniture (check out flea markets, second hand stores for good buys.) Bedding, towels,

appliances etc. It is very expensive when you first move out because you have to get all this stuff for the first time. Then there is the

cost of the move itself and also most apts want first and last month's rent in advance plus damage deposit. Also please buy tenant's insurance. This is fairly cheap and you really need it if there is a fire or someone breaks into your place steals your stuff. Good luck!
