Moving out and college?

right now i want to go to the honors college i got accepted in but i have no scholarships and i cant afford tuition, we didnt qualify for any goverment grants even though my family has very very little income. if i were to move out into an apartment and live by myself would they give me a grant since i would have an extremely low income or would they still look at my parents. i'm 18, so i am legal.

  1. it would not make any difference.  Until you can answer NO to any of these questions, you will have to report your parents income on your fin aid application.  

    You have to be 24 years old or over, have kids or a few other things before you don't report the folks income.  Note: no questions there about where you live or who claims who on what tax form.

Until you are 24, married, or have a child, you are considered a dependent student (meaning they'll use your folks income).  Sometimes an orphan or a legally emancipated child can be granted special status, but it is at the school's discression & each school is only allowed a certain number of special exceptions in a given time frame.  I work at a college & we have had student's who hadn't seen or talked to their parents in years, but still had to use their info to apply for Federal Aid.
