Question:

Moving out for good?

So eventually this is going to happen, be it today or 2 years from now. My friend wants to move to California, and is looking for someone to go with. We're both like pretty young (under 20). I have absolutely no savings of any kind. I'm pretty sure he does not either. He's planning on a one way train ticket to Cali and I'm seriously thinking about going with him. No living arrangements in Cali, no jobs lined up, no vehicle, nothing, not even taking a suitcase. I already quit my job where I am now and I think if it does happen it'll happen before the drop date for my school, so I'll be able to get most of my money back from the school. So my question. Has anyone ever just picked up and left? If so what would you suggest, any pointers? It's going to happen and hopefully soon. I just want to be prepared for what's going to happen. I'm really just looking for any words of advice. Anything would be greatly appreciated.

  3. In 1994 I left my job and family in Connecticut and moved to Florida by myself to pursue my dream. My dream didn't quite workout the way I hoped and eventually I move back to CT. But, I never regretted it. It was a great experience.

    What I learned is that life is what you make of it. If you sit around longing for the life you used to lead, then it'll be a horrible experience. If instead, you work on achieving the life you want, it'll be great. There are a lot of opportunities in CA. You need to actively seek them out and utilize them. It is expensive living in CA, but that's because there is the money available there to make it expensive. If you work hard and smart, you can make it. People will try to sway you one way or the other. Make sure it is you who makes the final decision. And once the decision is made debate ceases. You must then actively support your decision. Don't expect your friend to carry you. And once your in CA try to get a car. The public transportation there isn't great.

    The words that inspired me to make such a life changing move were said by Theodore Roosevelt:

    or where the doer of deeds could have done better.

    The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena;

  4. Good luck...Its not a smart move but good luck..Its never good to go anywhere with out arrangements. Or even a job. Consider that california is the 2nd most expensive state in the country..Actually its a dumb move. I will not do a sugar coated spin. But you will find out on you own. Epically going with someone who can pretty much leave you out to dry then you will really be on your own.

  5. Do some research, make some plans, save some money, and then don't let anyone talk you out of doing what you really want to do. Have fun.

  6. this is how people become homeless.A lot of horrible things can happen to you on the street.Then again maybe it is worse where you are now. I don't know. Good luck!!
