Question:

Moving permanently to the UK (odd situation)?

Heya all. My situation is a little bizarre. My parents were born and raised in the UK, but moved to the US for work related reasons. I was born in the US. After 30 years of green cards, may parents are now US citizens. When I was younger, I held dual citizenship (easier to go and visit relatives), but had to choose at 18 (I chose US, it was more practical at the time). I'm 28 now, and in the next couple of years I'm planning on moving permanently to the UK. I know I'm going to need to get a new passport and work visa, but I'm not sure if my parents situation or the fact that I used to have dual citizenship will make any difference.

Basically, I'm wondering where to start, and who to talk to about this. I know these things take time, so I'm looking to get the ball rolling sooner rather than later.

Thanks in advance for your help.

  1. I would start on the BritainUSA website.  The link below is for US residents with UK ancestry, including information on free entry without visa if you can prove your UK ancestry.

It is very detailed and is for US residents who require British passports, visas, etc.  I used this site recently to renew my UK passport ($250) -- only took 3 weeks, because my US citizenship papers have not yet come through (and we're going to the Bahamas this fall).
