  1. Try to show self confidence, but NOT arrogance, be yourself, use sense of humour. Try to use the situation to learn something, this could be a great experience for you!  I moved all the way from the US to the UK  seven years ago and didn't know anyone other than my British husband.  Yes, it was a "Culture Shock", but once I got over that, I love it here! People like to talk about themselves, so listen, be interested in what they have to say. No doubt they will want to know about you, too, so have some quips available to help start up/continue conversations.

I know it's stressful to move, but if it's inevitable, you have to turn it into something positive for your own sense of self, don't get eaten up by it, enjoy it as a new and exciting challenge!

  2. i travel back to England often and i always find it humerous to see the motorway sign ...THE NORTH..

as if northern England is some remote and scarey place.

i am from Middlesbrough and now live in Canada.

honestly. when you move 'up north' (i wish you had said where) just behave as you would had you moved somewhere in the south...people are the same the world over..some nice..some not so nice...

your not going to another planet... relax..enjoy the newness and  don't verbally compare north and south.

i wish you well in your new adventure, and remember you can always go back

  3. The difference between the North of England and the Home counties is one of general tolerance in the south, and of insularity the further North you go. That's not to say you are unwelcome, but the south is full of folk from everywhere all doing quite well, and the provinces are the people that stayed behind and are wary of those that have wider experience. But you'll find these attitudes in Norfolk, even parts of Kent too, so learning to deal with it is a good lesson in life. Once you've learnt to live unscathed you can try the real test of the North Welsh and Western Scots!

  4. If you end up hating it that much then move back south.

The important thing is to settle in to things there and not try to isolate yourself as the southerner of the group.

  5. Learn a few useful phrases like...'Eh up'!...and E-by -gum!

This will fool them into thinking you are one of them and will make the simple souls accept you despite your obvious superiority.

Also develop a taste for pies.
