Question:

Moving questions?

My fiancee (soon-to-be-wife) and I are moving from Minneapolis MN to Austin TX in September. We would prefer that the move not cost more than $2500. We live in a 2 bedroom apartment, and will probably be paring down our stuff to move into a 1 br. But we have the usual, 37" LCD TV, sofa, boxes full of wedding/kitchen gifts, closets full of clothes, etc. Can we hire any commercial movers to do this for $2500? We've looked into organizations like "Nationwide Relocation Services" but they appear to mostly be scams.

Does anyone have GOOD experience with Nationwide Relocation Service or American Van Lines (Not NORTH American Van Lines)? Or should we just get a U-Haul?

  1. I just moved from Dallas to Atlanta 800 miles.  We used Mayflower Van Lines.  They will send a Representative to your place and give you a firm estimate on your move.  If you actually have less weight they will reduce the charges but it will never be more than the estimate.  Be sure if you choose to UHaul that you figure in all the costs (gas is expensive and those trucks get terrible mileage).  We also paired way back on our move and it cost $3300.  The estimate was for $3800 but the weight was less so they reduced it.  Just be sure to use a reputable carrier and get a firm estimate.  There are a lot of horror stories about the moving industry.  Good Luck

p.s. We have a son in Austin and if we lived anywhere in Texas that is where we would be.

  2. My boyfriend was going to move from St. Louis, MO to Bozeman, MT, and had reserved a Budget truck for $1500.

  3. You are going to pay minimum of $3,500 for the move unless you hire U-Haul.  I wonder if i will splurge next time and rent from Ryder which seems to have better trucks.  Then i look at U-Haul's prices and always go cheap.
