  1. My fiance is from South Africa, I'm from Alberta. Poor guy froze his first year up here. Bundle up, drink lots of water, and learn to love hot coffee. You'll get used to it pretty quick.

It's going to be +19 C today in Central Alberta, yet it snowed in Calgary yesterday. That's Alberta :D

  2. I'm going to work in Alberta too and i'm scared of what the weather will bring too. If you thought -4 was freezing (it is by my standards too), then you will be in for a shock!

Average temps as I understand it around the calgary area in winter are -10 as the high, and around -20 or even colder at night. Edmonton area is even colder than that! Dress warm.

  3. Being that you are from the Philippines you might find Alberta very cold depending on what part of Alberta you settle in.  If you go in the summer and get used to the climate you might be OK in the winter although it does go down to -40 or even colder in some locations.  Yes, there are bars and clubs there.  After all, we are somewhat civilized here in Canada.

  4. Yeah, weather would be a problem for you. Since you would be working at a hotel, you won't be making enough money to afford a place to live and living on the street in the winter is very hard.  Not so bad in the summer though. You won't need to worry about bars and clubs because you won't be able to afford to go them either. Serious.

  5. You will find Alberta very cold, especially the first winter, but you will get used to it.  When you get there people will help you figure out the clothes you need and so on.  And yes, there are bars and clubs in Alberta, but how much night life is available will depend on your location in Alberta.

What others have mentioned about not having much money if you are working for a hotel could be very real, depending on the job you have been hired for.  You might want to ask the hotel about the availability of housing.  Some hotels provide accommodations for immigrant workers on a short term basis until they can get settled.  You also didn't say where you will be in Alberta.  Some areas of Alberta are far more expensive than others, and housing options are far less in the more northern communites.   You need to ask some questions of your prospective employers.  Best of luck with your plans.

  6. I know of many Phillipine immigrants who can survive Calgary weather.  Dress warmly and you'll be fine.

There are clubs in the major cities and tourist centers, and bars pretty much everywhere.  If there's a hotel, there's likely many bars around it.  If you're working a ski resort, your options might be more limited unless it is near a town.

  7. -4, positively balmy weather. In Calgary it can get down to

-45 in the winter (-60 and below with the wind chill - now that is cold).

Do not forget your thermals, toque, gloves, thick socks, insulated boots etc.

But in the summer it can get as high as +40, so you will need light weight clothes etc.

Have fun here, it is a fantastic place to live.

As for asking if there are any bars, clubs etc. In the big centres there are lots. But if you are intending working out on the prairies, most towns will have at least a bar.

Further to what John W. said. We are getting to be civilised over here, we also have telephones, automobiles and television with digital pictures.
