  1. If you are a qualified teacher and are under 45 you should have no trouble obtaining permanent residency and a job - see www.immi.gov.au for all the info.

Cost of living is a bit hard to say, it depends on where you live. The major cities can be quite expensive for housing, but it's much cheaper in a smaller city or a regional town. Cars are dearer than the US, food is very good quality and pretty well priced. Health care is free or inexpensive. Overall it tends to work out around the same.

Some of the main cultural differences to the US the way I see it are:

Much safer, no guns, much less violent crime

Less extreme wealth and poverty, most Aussies are fairly middle class

We are a lot less religious

More multicultural and more knowledge of the world

Australians are mostly what Americans call 'liberal'

More relaxed and laid-back, but we still work hard

Voting is compulsory and most Aussies are happy with it that way.

    'Socialised medecine'

We drive on the left and use British spelling

  2. Australia is great.  The people are laid back and easy going.  The government is based on the Westminster system and is democratically elected every three years.  If you are looking for work then it is available, probably in one of the cities but do not ignore the rural and bush locations as well as it is often difficult to attract people to the bush.  Pay is good (AU$0.86 = US$1).  I would recommend you contact the Australian Embassy and speak to an immigration officer about your options.  Come for a holiday

  3. Australia is a great place to live. A bunch of my friends moved there from high school and they have nothing but good things to say about it. If you are moving to Sydney, the city is kind of like Toronto. If you have ever been to Toronto. Its pretty laid back. I recommend living there.
