Moving to Australia?

Hello everyone!

I'm italian and I'm planning to move to Australia with my bf but I need some good tips to be ready for any eventuality.

First of all, I'd like to know which town has the more reasonable cost of living (especially in terms of home rentals), and which is the best place to settle in for work (I have a bachelor's degree in languages and currently working in advertising and marketing in a petroleum company. My boyfriend, instead, is an electrical engineer and he's now working in a drilling company).

Thank you in advance for your help:-)

  1. Hello, Don't listen to Jstnfox, he is my friend, there are nice places in sydney or if you want tropical and relaxation (but expensive), the Whitsunday islands (where i live) it is to die for.

  2. Australia is very large and has a diverse range of weather, housing and job opportunities.

Your being Italian isn't an issue in Australia.

Melbourne is possibly the place to look at for your job opportunities but your language skill may be suited more to Canberra. The mining industry though tends to be concentrated in Perth. The cost of living in the capital cities is dearer than in regional areas. Melbourne is cheaper than Sydney or Canberra or Perth.

  3. There are places in victoria that have rent for a 3 bedroom house from $260per week I will include a hyperlink so you can have a look yourself. Victoria is a lovely state that has cheap housing and many job opportunities.

  4. Which town? You make it sound like we're only 100kms by 100kms  with five or six towns to pick from. hehe

I think it depends on what state you're interested in moving to. (And if you don't know, find out about their climate and figure out which is best suited for you.) Then let us know so I can help you more. :D

There is Stanthorpe though, in Queensland, hot but does have cold times (so you get a good mix), that has a huge Italian community, it might help you feel less homesick. Or Melbourne, the city has a huge Italian community along one particular street in the city center

  5. Melbourne is the 2nd largest city in Australia and has the largest number of Italian migrants. It is very multicultural. Its is also cheaper than say, Sydney yet big enough to keep you busy.

The head quarters for Rio Tinto and BHP (both Australia's largest mining companies) are based in Melbourne too. Shell Oil is based in Melbourne as well.
