Question:

Moving to England?

My dream is to move to London (heck anywhere in England) once I am finished with college (2 years--accounting program). Any tips? Do you think it is going to be too much for me to handle? I won't have a lot of money...at least I can't see me having much by then. But I so want to go...

  1. well, don't move to central london, hey central ANYWHERE, to begin with.

the prices for houses are SO HIGH!!!

you can buy a two bedroon flat near windsor, for the same price as a 5 bedroom detatched house in the middle of wales (not that i reccomend moving to the middle of wales . . .mostly hills . . . .)

i know you're probably gonna rent to start but be aware of how high prices are and the fact that London is really cramped, so if you just lived of the edge (where it's cheaper) and went on the underground to work each day, you'd save a ton of money.

it shouldn't be too much for you too handle, but that depends on where you're from.

be aware that most english con artists work in London and dont put your wallet in your back pocket see here:

there are loads more scams like this, as in any city, so be aware of all your belongings all the time.

London is a great place dispite all of this and i hope you have a great time!!

  2. It would help if you said where your coming from and what passport you hold.

You may need a visa. If your outside the EC you will require a Work Permit as well.

Nowhere in England is cheap and London is very expensive. I live 20 miles from the City Centre and a 1 bedroom flat rents for a minimum of £475 a month. The price of food is going up rapidly and petrol costs are almost the highest in the world.

In my view London is over-rated. Somewhere on the south coast is better. Get a map out and take a look at the area from about Weymouth, heading east to about Eastbourne.

  3. England is very expensive to live in.  Rent, council tax, fuel and food are costing alot these days and just going up and up.  Also because of our health service and social welfare system income tax is quite high.  Will your degree make you a chartered accountant?  If not get your preffessional exams done in America first and then you should have no problem getting a high paid job here.  Do you know much about England?  If you are just thinking rolling hills and cups of tea then you should at least have one vacation here before you think anymore about moving as you need to know about the negative aspects like binge drinking teenage thugs with knives, tabloid newspapers, road rage, crazy Sunday trading laws etc.

  4. i fear all you know about england is the fairytales you have been told...why england at all? it's horrible! not all cups of tea you know!

  5. dont bother-

in london people don t talk to others-  like zombies.

im the midlands all u will do is get drunk

up north they never seen an american- culturally challenged ppl.

the best place to move to is probally kingston upon thames !

  6. unfortunatley it is very difficult for a Non EU or non British Commonwealth citizen to move here and work these days

because of mass immigration over the past few years, to obtain a working Visa for the UK you will have to go through a points system for highly skilled immigrants. Basically if you do not have a skill that we are in high demand of you will not be granted a Visa to work.

Also, any UK, EU and Commonwealth Citizen is above you in the pecking order for jobs.

Also, England is not like what it is made out to be in Movies and on TV. In places it is overcrowded, polluted, dirty, full of youth violence, muggings, stabbings, binge drinking.

if your really serious about this and you feel you have enough skills to pass through the immigration points system, then i would take a vacation here to get a feel of what the place is like, because if you have never been here, i can assure you, it is nothing like what you think it will be.

Most British people want out of this country as it steadily goes down hill, and thats why thousands of Britons move out of the country every year
