  1. Ok...as far as hurricanes go, hurricanes happen every year, by mostly the storms cross over uninhabited parts of the ocean, and don't hurt anyone. Sometimes they do blow over land, but the last hurricane was in '93 and the one before that was in '83...so I don't really think they're a big concern. There hasn't been a tsunami since the fifties, and those both hit KAUAI, not the big island.

The volcano is only on one island, and really doesn't move much faster than a dribble.

Earthquakes are pretty minor, there was one a few years ago that was the biggest we had. A couple of old building fell and some dishes broke, but there were no deaths.

Crime is very low. On the Big Island I don't know anyone on my street who locks their doors.--and it's probably one of the islands with the worst crime.

Sharks: there's maybe one death a year due to sharks, maybe less. Don't swim at night, don't swim when the water is murky, and don't swim by yourself. Most fatalities occour when the person drowns. Oh, and if a shark does grab you, poke it in the eye.

  2. Ahh, Don't worry. I live in Hawaii.

Earthquakes? There was one a few years ago and it was nothing. You can get earthquakes and tsunamis anywhere. Theres danger anywhere you go.

Whatever you're reading from is making Hawaii sound really creepy. Haha. It's all good. x3

It's always sunny and it barely rains. When it DOES rain, it's not bad at all. Many beaches.

    x3

    Hope I helped <3

  3. You forgot Sharks.  But seriously,  I lived here almost all my life and here's my beliefs.

    1)  Volcanoes are only on the Big Island of Hawaii.  It's only affecting a few people who were crazy enough to buy a house so close to it.  I live on Oahu, where Diamond Head, Waikiki, etc. is.  MANY volcano-safe areas.

    2)  Only 2 Tsunamis I think in 100 years.  None in my lifetime, both on the Big Island again.  The Tsunamis only hit near the shoreline, going up a few hundred feet inland) on a certain side of the island.  Not like it engulfs the whole island.  These islands are bigger than you think.  Plus we have technology now that alerts us as soon as a tsunami is generated.

    3)  Floods -  here and there.  c**p shoot I would say.  I've never experienced any flood damage to my Parents House, my place, or my shop.

    4)  Hurricanes -  Only Iniki hit Kauai and that's in 1 or 2 hundred years.  Yeah, they got messed up!  That's the only one that hit us.  Knock on wood.  Guam had many, but not us.  If we do get a direct hit on Oahu, we're f***'ed, but none hit us on Oahu.

    5) Earthquakes -  Only that big one on the Big Island again.  That's probably the only strong one in a hundred years as well.  On my island of Oahu, I slept through it.  Everyone else felt it, though.  That was the only one felt on Oahu in many years as well, although no damage.  35 years, I've NEVER felt one.

We also don't have any snakes, alligators, crocodiles, deadly spiders, either.  We also don't have snow or hail for driving hazards, or tornadoes.  Rare to never any gang shootings, drive-by's, car jackings.  No terrorist attacks.  Never heard "on the streets" of any muslim extremists.  Little to no air pollution.  Water is one of the cleanest in the world...drink straight from the tap.

    Real concerns are:

    Cost of living

    Pedestrian/cyclist accidents

    maybe property crimes(thefts)

    sun exposure

    traffic

I'm curious about where you read how "awful" it is here?  The author either hasn't lived here or he's just the biggest ***** on Earth.  Probably wore a helmet when he wrote the article.  Life is too short not to come here.  Paradise awaits you!!!  It's 2 am right now, but I feel this need to tell you this.

Take care, good luck, and see you when you get here!

    Aloha.

  4. In the 33 years I have lived here:

No one has been killed by a volcano.

    We have had no tsunamis.

We have had many minor floods, but only one that I recall caused deaths & that was due to a resevoir that had its dam break.  I believe 7 ot 8 people died.

We have had 2 hurricaines, with no loss of life that I can recall.  Kauai & the leeward side of Oahu were the only areas that sustained significant damages.

We have had one major and numerous minor earthquakes with no loss of life.

I think your odds are pretty good.

  5. haha.  that's funny.  for real, if you look at almost any spot on the globe, and you look really closely, you will find that there are natural disasters aplenty to worry about (i live in new mexico and we have a fault line running through our city).  you never know, right?  yes Hawaii has the potential to have a serious hurricane and yes there is a major active volcano on the Big Island.  mostly it does not interfere with every day life, but you will have to get used to being prepared for flooding and hurricanes, just like people who live in Florida.  you will see flooding.  you will see heavy rain and mudslides.  those are the most likely things.  other than that it's the same as living anywhere.  anything could happen.  enjoy beautiful hawaii!
