Moving to Ireland.. and making friends?

So I'm moving to Ireland sometime this year. I have no idea what I want to do, I've had 5 years in retail and 1 year in a bank, but I'm pretty open to any job! I'm ok with new people and relatively good at going up to a group of strangers and starting to chat. What I wanted to know was where would people reccomend going to live? I was thinking somewhere like Kerry or Cork so if anyone knows anything about job prospects in these areas or other area's they'd reccomend that'd be great.. Also, what is your best way of making new friends when you don't know anyone?

  1. people in cork and kerry are very friendly so you shouldnt have much problem making friends.

but i dont know that there would be many job opportunities in kerry...where in kerry were you thinking of going?

If you go to Cork city, then there would be way more jobs and theres lots to do there as well socially

  2. Anywhere in ireland is a good place to go, but i would avoid Limerick, it ahs the highest gun and knife crime in ireland (including the north)

  3. There are loads of opportunities for retail in Dublin, where I live, and there should be openings for banking too, as this is where most of the banks have headquarters. I know very little about Cork or Kerry, but there would be more vacancies in Dublin. The only problem is that Dublin (and the rest of Ireland) is very expensive.

As for making friends, I'd recommend a few evening classes. You'll meet people through your job, but there's no harm in also signing up for pottery, self-defence or anything like that.

  4. if you move to Dublin or some where close you would have no problem with getting a job and you will already have made a friend...lol.....cork is nice as well i don't know much about Kerry i only went there once and the views are great.......accommodation would be cheaper there then dublin....i hope you like it here in ireland and i wish you all the best.....lol

  5. I hate the way so many people on here tell people to move to Dublin.....but dont listen to them!! I would recommend going to Cork!!

I live there myself and theres really good nightlife and making friends is easy!!

As for job prospects well the construction industry in Ireland is slowing down but there is two new shopping centres......one in douglas that is being redeveloped and will be Corks biggest shopping centre, the second is called the Elysian which i think will be Irelands biggest building and is a Shops/Apartments combo so there will be lots of jobs prospects in both!!!

This is the Elysians website: http://www.theelysian.ie/ but unfortunatly no info on jobs

  6. I'd suggest look up Cork or Kerry newspapers (do a www.google.ie)  search for job adverts, or www.monster.ie, to give you an idea of the sorts of jobs on offer.  Retail sounds good, you get to meet staff and customers, and we are friendly here.  I'd recommend towns rather than cities which can be a bit anonymous, and if you can live within a town your travel needs will be minimized, and if there is a good bus or rail service, then other places are within reach too.

You'll easily make friends wherever you are.  Work, sporting activities, church  -  just about anywhere you meet people.  Come and join us  -  you'll be welcome !!
