Question:

Moving to Ireland as Canadian with British passport...?

I am Canadian born and raised but my dad was born in England which entitles me to british citizenship. I really would like to try living in Ireland in the next new years and know that there is pretty lax rules for people going to Ireland from England and vice versa to work and live. I am saving loads of money, so money is not really an issue but I'm not sure how to go about getting a job. In Canada you need to have a social insurance number and in the UK you need to have an NHS number. Do you need anything like that to work in Ireland and how do you get it? Also, It is advised when you are travelling to the UK under a Canadian passport that you buy a return ticket just in case customs won't let you in. What if you are coming in under a British passport? Can customs send you back if you don't have proof of residance?

  1. I am actually from ireland

well there is nothing stopping you

i have two candian cousins that have moved here

just check out the work permit i am not sure what the laws are with that but if the passport is british you should be fine

our laws seem to be very laxed on foreingeers

  2. If you have a UK passport you will be fine. As the UK & Ireland are both Eu you can live/work there legally.

I am a canadian living in the UK-I carry a Canadian passport with the stamp saying right of abode in the UK which means i come back in through the returning UK citizen line. I just hold it open to the relevant page. never had a problem. No one has ever asked for any other details.

As for getting a social insurance number, not sure if it's the same in Ireland, but in the UK I just went down to the social and filled out a form, showed them my documents, and had one in a week or two. I'm sure it's not much different in ireland.

  3. Travel under your British passport, British citizens are entitled to settle in the Republic of Ireland and be treated exactly the same as Irish citizens and visa versa.

Movement of citizens between the Republic of Ireland and the UK is governed by the Ireland Act 1049 (name in both countries), and more recently by the EU.

In the UK you can't apply for your National Insurance Number unless you're actually working.  The Irish equivalent of the NIN is the Personal Public Service (PPS) Number, again you need to resident in Ireland to apply for it, the link below will give you the information you need.
