Moving to Ireland - banks etc?

I am thinking of moving to Ireland - I already have a job offer and will be living somewhere in South Dublin. I'm looking for recommendations on things I will need to set up over there. Which Bank to use in particular...but also anythin I might not have thought of, like any tax savings possible etc. I am a little surprised at the amount of tax that will be taken from salary. I think I will end up with about €2,000 net per month. Is that a comfortable salary in Dublin, I hear nights out aren't exactly cheap there!

And advice appreciated!

  1. I like royal bank of scotland, only requires 50 pounds to open an account and is easy to do.

  2. I lived in South Dublin for 4 years and Its a very high cost of living. A recent survey stated that Firemen, Police and teachers are struggling to survive in the capital on their incomes. Its all about budgeting. It depends on what are you live in. Expect to pay about 125 a week for an appartment. Nights out can run up a bill but shop around. Pubs like Bruxelle's off Garafton Street aren't that expensive and there's always good craic. It all depends on taste.

As for banks they're not as competetive as the were 5 ears ago when the celtic tiger reigned! I bank with AIB and have done all my life. I've had no personal problems with them.

  3. Chances are that you can do better on the taxes.  Are you talking about Ireland taxes or US taxes.  You are still obliged to file a US return but on that kind of income you will not owe any taxes.

Also your Ireland taxes withheld are subject to refund so look into not having so much withheld in the first place.

I also have found the people at AIB friendly and accommodating, but that is true of nearly all Irish people.

    Enjoy Ireland, everyone does!
