Hi I live in England, UK but I'm thinking of moving to Ireland to go to university, have considered Cork and Dublin but am open to other possibilities.

My Family is Irish (from Co. Sligo) and we are all Catholic inc. me but I am only 1/2 irish and hold a Brittish Passport... but am willing to change citizenship if I like it !!

So...

What is the quality of life for an Irish student?

Is it easy to get a job / rent housing?

How expensive is living Ireland?

Should I go for dual citizenship?

many thanks xx

  1. Living is expensive and jobs are scarce but student life is good. If you get dual citizenship the goverment with probably pay for you college, it'd be worth looking into.

Also, acomadation is much cheaper in Sligo, but obviously it deepends on what you want to do.

  2. I'm 1/2 English 1/2 Irish too and I studied in NUI Maynooth for three years and I can honestly say they were the best three years of my life!!

It's a fantastic University and it's only about forty-five minutes on the bus into Dublin.  It's cheaper to live in Maynooth than in Dublin too and there are new student apartment blocks there that were built just after I left.  The quality of life for students in Ireland is pretty good, I mean, I didn't have much money while I was studying but I had a helluva good time!!

I've got dual citizenship now and it doesn't make much difference really but it's good to know that I can produce either my Irish passport or my British one if I need to.  I think it 's worth it to get an Irish passport too.

On another note, I know loads of people who studied in Cork and absolutely everybody seems to love Cork City.  It's a really nice place and a bit cheaper than Dublin too.

    Best of luck  : )

  3. - Life as a college student is supposed to be very good.

    - Jobs are scarce atm, and renting I think is ok, but prices are high.

    - Inflation and Recession

  4. Living in Ireland is really expensive, its hard to get a job.. its going through recession at the moment.. its a bit of a mess, student life is meant to be good though

  5. Quality of life is good.

It's difficult to get a job especially one that will accomodate your studies. The students unions should be some help though.

Rent depends on what college you go to. Where I am I'm paying €90 a week.

Living expenses can be quite high but there's always an Aldi or Lidl around.
