Question:

Moving to Ireland (from Canada)?

Lately I have been really wanting to pack up and move to Ireland for 6 - 8 months (maybe permanently, just trying it out for now) and am not only torn for personal reasons as its kind of a crazy thing to do but I'm also getting a lot of mixed messages. First off, I'm in the process of getting my Irish passport as my dad was born in Ireland so I'm tech. already a citizen... no worries about visas.

So... is living in Ireland really THAT expensive? Ive heard dublin and galway are insanely expensive but I kind of was hoping to live in either of those cities (maybe a few months in each) as it would probably easier to meet a lot of people and see if I click with Ireland. I'd be okay just renting a room somewhere as roomates might give me a head start in meeting people and save me some money, otherwise I'd have to afford rent on my own. I have a college diploma but I have my doubts about getting a great job.

Whats the pet industry like in Ireland? I've been working at Petsmart for about a year and love this industry. Ideally, I'd love to get some sort of pet related job but Im willing to settle for whatever will pay the bills.

Let me know what I can expect in my big move to ireland :)

I live in the Capital of Ireland(Dublin) and it is a very nice and fun place to live or visit. There is a lot of places to visit .You can go shopping for hours in Dublin city and there you can find the spire (a big sharp needle) the river liffey and many places where the 1916 rising was fought. In county Clare holds the Burren which can grow arctic plants,Tropical plats and nearly all worldwide plants and flowers. In County Louth you can find many beach resorts like Dublin!!Theres the Giant Causeway county Antrim,The hill of Tara(a very historic place) in County Meath,The Pheonix Park(largest enclosed park in Europe)county Dublin,Trinity College Dublin which houses the famous book of kells. There is only 1 let down in Ireland ,The weather can sometimes be gloomy or wet if you know what I mean. But otherwise Ireland is a great country!

    Good Luck

  2. Don't panic.   Ireland is expensive but not that bad compared to Toronto, probably about 30% dearer but the wages reflect that.

Best to get a hotel room for a week and look up the small ads for apartment sharing. There are lots of ads in the Evening Herald newspaper.

Pets are big here with lots of family run vets and some larger pet hospitals, where you might get a job. Also mobile pet grooming is big , who knows you could set up on your own.

Follow your dream, you won't regret it.

  3. Oh do you want to swap i want to move to Canada :)

  4. Im fairly sure Cork is your place as there is some enormous pet store on the outskirts,or so the radio says.AND its not too dear at all at all

  6. Ireland isn't the biggest on pets. But besides that, you're all set. It isn't actually super expensive. Maybe a bit more than Canada but not much.
