I'm thinking of moving to Jamaica.

Does anybody know the job prospects for a college-educated, caucasian american?

Any advice?

  1. Your best bet is to go there for a week's vacation and look around.  You may get something in the gambling industry.

  2. if you wanna live in Jamaica you have to know how to make yourself not look too extra.

  3. Step1:

Visit the island first and speak to persons in the industry.  Depending on the industry or area in which you are qualified, you may ahve better chances with a Masters or Doctorate.

    Step 2:

While there look at cost of living, grocery, rent etc.

    Step 3:

Determine why you want to live there.  Do you have any connections?  On what basic will you go there.  From a legal perspective, you will need a job offer to get a work permit and a job does not guarantee a work permit.

    Step 4:

Look at opportunities for opening your own business in the areas of education, psychology and medicine  etc.

You have a good chance in areas such as Dentistry, orthodontics, cardiology, plastic surgery etc, which it does not appear you have the qualifications for right now.

    Good luck!!!

The area of qualifications would be good to know.

  4. it will depend on what your college degree is - financial degrees are good, lots of finance related jobs in Kingston. Liberal arts- you would be SOL- Jamaicans like people to actually have taken college seriously and have useful knowledge not just have spent 4 yrs in an education institution.

    K

  5. I dunno but lucky you, enjoy!!! :)

  6. i think u should go there because jamaica is a beautiful place and the people there are very friendly, besides, if u are qualify enough job would be easy for you to get.

  7. I visited there last year and it's awesome, at least at the resort were stayed at, LOL. I know there is a lot of poverty and unemployment with navite Jamaicans, but I don't know about job prospects for your situation. I have heard from a resident that the cost of living is kind of high, because so many products have to be imported. You might check here: https://www.cia.gov/library/publications... Good luck.

  8. Well its hard to say without a field...

I mean we dont exactly just hire white people (though there are a few existing plantocracies)

so lets see... first i would say it would be good if u had a BSc or a Masters.  you could look to

tourism, public relations, marketing, getting a job at the US embassy or anything really

If your interested in IT there are lots of telecos and IT opportunities but they prefer experience and certification. try splashjamaica.com or caribbeanjobs.com

As a new school leaver you could consider the peace core, or working with some non profit. or try some exchange program like joyst

But why would u want to give up earning in the US to come to jamaica and work for less??  your minimum wage is better than most salaries...

If its health industry experience u are after then contact ministry of health www.moh.gov.jm or national health insurance and there are surely intership opps for people in medicine

Is it that u want to know the country?  if this is the case then talk to the consul and see what they have in the way of opportunity... then u will be looking for a job that allows u to move from parish to parish.

  9. Tourism-management related or real-estate biz catering to gringoes....

  10. no idea but jamaica cooooooooool!!!

  11. It depends on your degrees. you may get jobs in the health care field, education. you might have to do a short course if you are not up to the English(British ) Standards. Good Luck
