Question:

Moving to London: is it better to give in?

I live in Italy and have been trying for a while to get a chance to move to London. If I find a job, I don't have an accommodation and everytime a difficulty comes up. Ok then, I'm giving in but that will remain a dream of mine never come true.

I just wonder why they make it so hard for common people to move there. It's not like we all are rich and have a father that can give us money.

Sorry for this, I'm just a bit disappointed and cross.

  1. London is so expensive because you are not the only one who wants to live there. Demand for housing is high, supply little - that's why prices hit the roof. That's how it works...

Why don't you try and go there for a week, just for holidays, you would have a taste of it and maybe decide, that this city is not right for you.

And try to find some friends that live or have contacts in London, I'm pretty sure you have some!!! Good luck, and don't give up your dream!!!!

  2. never give up on your dreams . and there are better places in the world than London

  3. Just try approaching it from a different angle. Think about applying for live-in jobs as a temporary measure when you first arrive. Many hotels and bars offer that option. Not only does that solve the job and accommodation problem in one go, but bar work is a sure-fire way of meeting a lot of people and getting to know the local scene. When I first moved to Madrid I quite literally had the shirt on my back and about 50 quid. Now I have 2 children, a third on the way, we´ve bought a house etc etc. Moving abroad is always a gamble, but as the great Del Trotter says "Those who dare, win".

  4. my husband is from the middle east and 8 years ago he saved up enough money to live for a few months in london uk. He wanted to work over here. At first he could not get a visa but made appeal got it.  he got a visa and moved to london. He took lodgings with a nice couple who rented a room and board. he went to english school because he did not know very much english. after a 6 months of learning english he got a job.A few years later he  passed the english exam to enable him to go to university to get a masters degree and work in this country in his chosen profession. After 8 years he is now working in his chosen profession in this country. I hope this story has inspired you to follow your dream and take a chance like my husband did. My husband had hard times durring those 8 years and had to move a few times because of bad land lords but was lucky with employment and study. It wont be easy but you will get there!!! all the best and keep trying!!!

  5. It is way too easy to come to this country. Everyone from all over the world is coming to this country. Then there are no jobs left for us who live here. Just enjoy your own country, like I do.

  6. If you really want it, you will make it happen, eventually

However, London is ridiculously expensive, but if you really wanna live there, you will find a way to survive

If I were you, I would first try some alternatives, for example Zurich or  Amsterdam...

  7. London is a great city.  I don't live there, as I live in the Midlands.   London is very expensive to live in.  For example, a one-bedroomed flat in Central London, could be anything from £170,000 upwards!    If you wish to seek a job in London, move in, and find accommodation, the best thing you need is to try and find some accommodation, preferably rental, slightly outside London, and commute to work in London.  London does have its "London Weighting" system.  This means, that any company employing you, will have a basic salary plus a certain percentage of London Weighting on top, as most things you buy in London are more expensive than anywhere in the rest of the UK.

    Hope this helps?

  8. "I just wonder why they make it so hard for common people to move there."

I'm not sure who you mean by they? It's a very expensive place to live in for sure. But if it's your dream then you'll find a way. Save up, come here as a tourist, look for cheap accomodation and look for a job. Good luck to you bro, I wish I could move to Italy, lol. I will some day.

  9. I moved away from London two years ago because it was too expensive -it's too expensive to even live in the horrible areas! Maybe one day it'll get cheaper and you can move there! Keep looking at shared houses/flats - you never know something may come up! gumtree.com

  10. we use to live near london and moved away because the lifestyle was not ideal, plus it was an expensive place to live

  11. I moved to London on my own 9 years ago.  Sometimes you just have to take a gamble.  I didn't have a flat or a job.  I took a loan out from the bank, rented a flat I'd never seen before and just arrived!  Within a week I had got a job and decided the area I was in wasn't what I wanted.  I eventually found an area I liked and moved in there with a flatmate.  I met my husband at the job I took and now I'm happy married with a beautiful daughter still living in London.  If I hadn't taken the risk I wouldn't have my lovely family - just jump in the deep end, you can always go home if it doesn't work out.

  12. It's supply and demand and it's the same all over the world.

If you want to move to one of the most expensive cities in the world, you have to live with the hassle involved.

I was born in London and I detest the place.

I'm glad I moved away and discovered that there are places where you can live without paying through the nose and without being surrounded by posers and rich people who live in London so that they can tell everyone that they have a place in London.

In my opnion you should give up. Keep your dream because the reality is a nightmare.

  13. I really don't see why you are having a problem moving every one else has no problems ...

just tell the authority's you have nothing and they will give you a place to live and lots of money too..,.

    all for free...

just say non ho niente when you get here....
