Question:

Moving to Mexico if married to/getting married to a Mexican?

I am a female British Citizen (English) and want to marry a Mexican. The problem is, he wants me to move to Mexico and I am not sure on Mexican immigration laws. Am I right in thinking that I would not be allowed to enter the country unless I can prove that I am working for a foreign company and able to support myself financially?

Can anyone help?

  1. You will have no problem getting in . Fill out the FMT 180 day tourist visa and take care of the rest after you are here.

You will get an FM 3 Temporary resident permit. and can apply ,if you wish to apply  for Permanent status or citizenship after what used to be five years is now 3 in this case.  you will love it here.

Your second choice , you can go to your city's Mexican consulate.

This is my opinion based on what I have heard.

One thing for sure you should get some facts soon.

Roy Deganie Married a MEXICAN right here in Acapulco and they went back and forth to Canada and had two girls.

Returned and had the birth certificates created as if they were born here and in fact have two birth certificates each. Roy has never had an FM3 and I am not to sure he knows what it is.

He lived here for five or six years working at Noa Noa Market.

For 35 years Roy has had no dealings with immigration whatsoever.

Believe me when you are here and you have a marriage certificate they wont even ask..

He has no reason to fear La Migra.

He got tired of the transit cops taking his front plate that he had it welded on.

Your husband is not worried, he knows --you are worried because of what you have heard .

I have stories too numerous too mention

Mexican officials know they are barking up the wrong tree when they see a marriage certificate.

Do you think they would pick him up and deport him with a wife and two kids? here his wife Maru and good friend says

    His mi Marido

I knew a guy "One eyed Larry" who came in on a tourist VISA and stayed twelve years until he drowned one day at Caleta.

Another guy after 8 year over stayed visa.. Made a report that he had his pocket picked and had no I.D to clear the checkpoint in case they asked and rolled right into the states and used his Geen card to re enter the U.S

Bottom line if you can support yourself why would anyone worry about immigration . In twenty eight yeasr I have never had any dealing localy . I have never been asked for I.D. OR ANYTHING OF THE SORT.

  2. Just take your passport no problem getting in, you just need proof (passport) to get out!

  3. You may come to Mexico without a visa...you will get a tourist card good for up to 180 days ( be sure to  insist they give you the ful 180 days) when you  are on the plane.  If you have never visited Mexico before, it would be wise to visit first.  Do you plan to get married in Mexico?  If so, then, after you are married you can go to the INM ( immigration) office and apply for an FM3 visa.  If you marry before you come to Mexico, you can go to the Mexican Embassy in London and apply for the FM3 visa.  This visa allows you to live in Mexico.  It must be renewed once a year at the nearest  INM office and there are offices in every major city.  The fee is about $146.00 USD for the first time, then $100USD each year.  They will give you a list of documents and an application form.  You must prepare these then turn them in  to get your visa booklet.  You Will have to show that you have a certain amount of money as monthly , steady income from your home country to get an FM3.  Normally this is about $1200 USD a month, but if you are married to a Mexican citizen, that is  changed to about half that amount.  Or you can show statements from your bank showing that you have a years worth of funds in your account.  The BIG deal with getting an FM3 is that proof of income.  Normally, a person must have an FM3 for 5 years, then get an FM2 visa for 2 years...this makes you an "immigrant."  Then you may apply for citizenship, if desired, and that takes a minimum of 2 years. Now...I know there are some ways to expedite, and streamline this process, and maybe get around the financial requirerment.  I have an American friend married to a Mexican citizen working on this now.  It is VERY difficult to get this info.  You can ask at the embassy.  I have an American friend here in Mexico married to a citizen, and she gave up on getting the other info and just has her FM3.  The way I just told you works fine, but what I am saying is, I know there is another way too...if you can get the info from the embassy.  You CANNOT work in Mexico unless you get a work permit added to your FM3 and the only way to do that is to find an employer in Mexico.  He must write a letter to immigration stating that he is giving you a job that he cannot find a Mexican citizen for ...then he sponsors your work permit and the permit is tied to that specific job.  This is very hard to do unless you have a very highly needed skill. Anyway, you certainly may come, and getting an FM3 is not that hard...you just need to have that proof of income.  Somepeople live in Mexico for YEARS on a tourist card. They just go to the border and stay gone a day and re-enter with another 6 month tourist card...but this is not ideal.  If i can help you in amy way, you may email me thru Yahoo.
