Hi All,

I will be moving to Minneapolis this August for my grad. studies. I've read a lot about the harsh winters there. I'm prepared to bear that kind of weather, may be, just for 2 years. Till now i've only lived in warmer climates. (i'm from india). ONly problem is I have a mild case of sinus. So i frequently catch cold and sometimes get sick becoz of it.

Can someone tell me if i will be able to manage there.

any info. would be greatly helpful to me.

Thanks.

  1. You will be fine in Minnesota. My kids have allergies and frequently get pneumonia and they still live in MN. Lots of people from all over the world live in the midwest. Yes, it will be colder, but your body will adjust and you will learn to dress in layers for warmth. Good luck to you in your studies. And a hearty welcome to the midwest!

  2. Keep in mind that temperature does not cause colds -- that is a misnomer. A cold is a virus. Where do you get the virus? From others. And in Minnesota, you are indoors with closed doors/windows for quite a few months of the year. So might you get more colds? Perhaps, but don't people in hot climates spend most of their summers indoors, too?

While I frequently grumble about our harsh Minnesota winters, I don't think I'd ever blame the winters for health issues (unless, of course, you die from exposure). In fact, Minnesota was recently ranked the #1 healthy state, and #4 in "livability". Perhaps all the weak, unhealthy people were killed off....

  3. We all seem to manage just fine.  I'd say most endure a sever case of the cold at least once a season.  My turn never seems to come during the winter though, it seems I catch the bug closer to the Spring/summer.  You are no more likely to catch a cold here in MN than you are in any other state though.

You will survive just fine.  Keep taking a daily vitamin and up your vitamin C intake (Orange Juice) when you can feel something coming on.

I never, never take cold meds just because I don't like them and I'm usually nursing or pregnant in the last 4 years, so I just don't risk it.  I survive just fine.  And they usually last only a week or so.

Good luck to you!  I hope you enjoy your stay here!
