  1. If you are coming from outside Canada, check the regulations for school placements.

If you want a newer house, head for the suburbs, which are not nearly as nice as the downtown areas.

Montreal is pretty well bilingual these days, and quite good humoured with it. It would be a good chance for you and your kids to acquire good French skills. [Yes, I have moved into a country where I did'nt speak the language. I know how it feels. We were fine.]

  2. Welcome to Montreal.

Being relatively new to Montreal myself, I started to put together a website bringing together the main aspects of the city. It's a work in progress but there is already more than 20 articles where you could learn about Montreal.

    Hope this helps.

  3. i cant be of much help but everyone speaks english in Montreal. And youll pick up on the french in no time anyway, except in a city like montreal or quebec you are hardly exposed to any french unless you want to be.

  4. West Island (Dorval, Pointe Claire, Dollard des Ormeaux, etc...) is quite English (Anglophone as we call it) and there are many new developments. I grew up out there and they have good schools and most areas are family oriented. There are tons of elementary schools (most public ones, you need to live in a certain radius to attend) High schools, there are more to chooose from as distance does not really matter.  Like someone said, you will need to check the rules for students.  Back in the 90's if you moved to Quebec, your child had to go to french school, not sure if it's the same still. You can check out these sites . English school boards:  http://www.emsb.qc.ca/en/index_en.asp

  5. Hardly exposed to any French in Montreal (or Quebec City)?!?

What is that girl smoking ???

She must be living (and smoking) on the West Island, lol!

If money is not an issue, look around Westmount or even Town of Mount-Royal (TMR) - it's pretty nice out there actually!

If money is indeed an issue, stick to the west side of Montreal - it's more English than French out there!

But please do not feel scared or intimidated by us French-Canadians - we don't bite... or at least not that hard, lol!

    Good luck to you!
