Moving to NZ from Australia?

If I moved to NZ from Australia for study for three year or more, could I move over and be a permanent resident or would I only be over thier under a student visa. The reason I ask is that for a PhD scholarship I need to be either a permanent resident or a citizen.

  1. as long as you are a citizen of australia you can go to nz for as long as you like as a permanent resident you will automatically be granted a visa on entry and are entitled to pretty much everything a nz citizen is. good luck you will be cold.

  2. First of all, as an Australian you don't need any type of visa to go to New Zealand whether you're studying, working or whatever.

Second, as far as I can see, Australian citizens are automatically New Zealand PRs, but I can't find anywhere that states it explicitly. The NZ citizenship site states that Australians are automatically eligible to apply for NZ citizenship after satisfying period of residence requirements which is an indication of their having PR status.

The long and the short of it is that you will need to contact the NZ immigration people to confirm your status, and if necessary, discover what you need to do to get official permanent residency.

  3. Geez another kiwi movin over.
