Moving to Rome, Italy?

I might be moving to Rome, Italy in a few years but I am not sure yet. Just wondering, currently if I am a US citizen am I allowed to take my Dell laptop with Windows XP into Italy or is this not allowed? How is housing? Is it like the U.S. with neighborhoods or totally different? I'd be moving with my family, and there is 5 of us all together. How does it work to take pets? Is this allowed? I have a small adult beagle. Is there internet available at the hotels or residential parts of Italy?

Any and all information on Italy and Rome, Italy would be greatly appreciated.

If you plan moving to Italy, you need a permanent residence visa, "permesso di soggiorno"

You can take your laptop, beware they have 220V, 50Hz.

It is a different country, different lifestyle, you have to adjust to it.

If it is your personal computer then you can bring it with you. Housing in Italy is generally much smaller than the uSA and normally in the cities you would live in an apartment. You do have different neighborhoods like in the USA. It is difficult to take pets and they normally have to go into quarantine. Internet is available everywhere. I moved to Italy almost over 4 years ago. You can bring your Dell computer you can bring what ever you want. If your dell is only 110v then you are going to have to get tranformes along with anything else that is 110v. If its 110-220v 50-60h you can just get an adoptor plug. Housing is very costly right now our rent is E900 which equals $1275 because of the exchange rate now. Housing is usually good. They have big houses usually close together with little to no grass. They like to build up so you may have a 3-4 level house they do have apartments but for 5 people you most likely will need to rent a house/villa. You can bring your dog we have a dog we got him here but many of our friends have brought there dogs from the states. You need to go to the vet. and get some paper work done and shots and certificate of heath usually no earlier then 10 days before the flight and then you need to check with you airline for other stuff. When you get here with your dog you need to get him on frontline the Italian or germany one because they have bad sandflyes and ticks put only dogs seem to get them not people. Then you need to get this msquito collar for the dog because the msquito carry this diesease that is like doggie aids and it will kill your dog if it get bit by a bug carring it but it kills the dog slowly. They do have internet serivce its called ADSL. they have three different companies Telecom which is the phone company for your house phone. and two others  suck big time and they just use the Telecom hardware anyway so it does not work well. Most places have ADSL but you need to check it out when you are looking for a place. It also usually takes a while to hook it up it took us almost 6 months. any other questions let me know,

but you just have to change the cord (you can buy one in Italy), the transformer will work with no problem (in older models only you had to manually select "220" or "110").

Housing... like in the US, it depends: big city (then, downton or uptown?), small city, towns... Compared to the US, apart few exception on the Alps, all small towns are generally near (say, no more than 50 miles) to an at least medium size city (at least 50,000 inhabitants). It's very unlikable you don't have neighborhood, if you live in Italy, unless you deliberately choose to find a "quiet" place (if that is what you mean).

Internet is available everywhere, broadband noe reach I'd say 70% of population or more.

Internet in hotels: you have to check with the specific hotel you choose.

Pets: generally, no problem.

no quarantine is needed! Just the basic things you should have yet plus a little more (a veterinary certificate); but look here:
