Did some searching and I see people CONSTANTLY say it is so expensive, but disregard that because I live in New York City which is worse so it won't be any shock for me. Even the nicest apt complexes in la jolla, del mar. etc are less or equivilent to NYC prices, so thats not an issue. Not to mention other costs of living are absurd in NYC...

Anyway with that out of the way, I have an MBA in finance so am looking to stay in that field, so with that in mind, where would be a good location in San Diego. I am a fan of Del Mar/La Jolla etc. Looking for physical "niceness" etc over proximity to jobs. Basically, I don't know much about WHERE corporate areas are located. Are they basically plopped randomly aside from downtown which I would like to avoid anyway?

  1. I'd recommend that you locate employment first, THEN find a place to live.  Corporate sites are generally in Sorrento Valley/Del Mar/La Jolla, and in the downtown district.

Traveling is a B**TCH and traffic is h**l, so that's why I say find the work and live near where you are going to be working so commuting isn't so terrible.

  2. The apts may be cheaper than New York but the wages here suck compared to NY. Our favorite saying is you're paid in sunshine not dollars.

    Find job then a place

  3. Heck..if money is not a factor then La Jolla or Coronado!  Love 'em both!

  4. If you're looking to stay in Finance, the areas you're likely to find work are:

    Golden Triangle (La Jolla/UTC/Sorrento Valley)

    Del Mar

    Downtown

    Rancho Bernardo

    Carlsbad

Truthfully, if you can afford it, Del Mar would be the best location to get to any of those places.  It's a short drive to the Golden Triangle, the 56 connects it to Ranch Bernardo, Carlsbad is against traffic, and downtown is accessible by train.

Avoid La Jolla Village.  The traffic in and out is a real pain.  You'll spend more time getting to and from work than you spend at work.

  5. Actually, San Diego can be more expensive than NYC. Check out what I wrote in another question, you might want to consider this since you are picking the most expensive places in S.D.

  6. Rancho Santa Fe in San Diego (92067) is the 2nd most expensive place to live in the United States. (More expensive than NYC)

But you’re on the right track with la Jolla, Del Mar, Coronado....etc.

  7. Yeah San Diego is expensive even if you dont live anywhere by the beach. My dad lives in Chicago and he has a pretty big house and pays only like $2000-$3000 a month. And my mom lives out in San Diego and her house is way smaller and she pays more.

If your looking for a place to live, dont get a beach house, those are way over priced and your not going to want to go to the beach everyday anyways. Just get a normal house or maybe a cozy apartment.
