Moving to San Francisco?

Getting ready to graduate from college in St. Paul, MN with a finance degree. SF looks like a great place to live, but i need some advise before i make the big move. What's a good neighborhood for a young professional to live. Where do young people do on weekends...bars, clubs?? Do you think it will be easy for a midwest guy to adjust to SF lifestyle (if there is a difference in lifestyle)?

  1. It's true San Francisco cost so little more to live in the St. Paul but you don't have to live in the city itself my daughter used to live in the city she moved over to Oakland at Lake Merit. Beautiful neighborhood right near the lake.Costs are about half of what it costs her to live in San Francisco. She got rid of her car because she's right near Bart. That saved another $800 a month.that's about $9200 a year. she likes it their better than she did living in cities and she still hangs out in the city. and works in the city. You'll find everything you're looking for. having a car in San Francisco is more of a nightmare than a luxury. Trying to find parking spot will drive the absolutely nuts.Public parking will run you15 to $20 a day and most of the apartment you rant   in San Francisco will charge you around $35 a month for your parking space.By saying about $800 a month without having a car you decide you want to go out of town you can rent a lot of cars for $9200 a year.

  2. Oh wow, I wish I had heard of San Francisco when I was single!

The first thing to know about The City is that it is VERY expensive! You might want to try to share something, if you don't have a real high paying job. Many people live east of the city or even out into the San Joaquin Valley. Depends on how you feel about commutes on an interstate that can look more like a parking lot during rush hour (rush hour on the interstate between Tracy and San Francisco, talk about an oxymoron!!).

But, San Francisco is an AMAZING city! So much to do, so much to see! I love it! The song was right, I did leave my heart in San Francisco!

  3. I agree with William; come out and spend a week or so here.

One thing you'll notice is that everything is a lot more dense here than other places.  The city is only 49 square miles, so traffic can be problematic.  However, this also means that you have easy access to all parts of the city.

And as mentioned above, it's very expensive.  Very.  Plan on spending at least $1200 a month for rent--and that's for a very small single or sharing a space with someone.

There's no one neighborhood for "young professional."  However, demographically, younger people tend to be in the Mission, Bernal Heights, SOMA (south of Market).  The Marina is lovely (and, of course, expensive), but tends to have more young marrieds; lots of pretty, fit people jogging with their baby strollers.

  4. Take time out to come out and stay a week. Bring a friend and spend time looking around. It will be fun and informative.
