Hi everyone, work is taking me, my wife and our two daughters (11,13) to Scotland and I can choose from these three cities.

Edingburgh, Glasgow or Dundee. Which, in your opinion would you suggest regarding education for our kids, prospects for the future and general well being and lack of crime, such as it is.

Serious replies please from those of you who have actually lived there. Thank you.

  1. Glasgow is a much better and more vibrant place to live if you like nice bars and restaurants, arts and culture etc. The people are also much friendlier than in edinburgh, the public transport is good, house prises are slightly lower, theres lots of nice parks, the best shopping in the UK outside London. just be careful when you choose the area to live if you want to be near good schools because there are problems with drugs in some areas but you'll get that all over the UK.

Ediinburgh has its bonuses also but they dont go much further than having a nice view of the castle from the city centre! The rest of the city is a dump!

I cant really speak for dundee as I've never lived there or known people from there!

Oh yeah, I meant to say, glasgow is slightly warmer and has less rain than the rest of scotland

  2. Dundee without a doubt. It's a beautiful town up on the coast. The people are really friendly and from what I hear the education system is really good all over Scotland

  3. Hi ,lived in Edinburgh and Glasgow, so know both cities quite well. Edinburgh is beautiful but cold and i don't just mean the weather,Glasgow on the other hand is a friendly place and just as cultural as the capital. Schooling ,well you'll find good schools and universities in both cities. Unfortunately you will also find crime as nowhere is immune from it now. Sorry i can't give you any info on Dundee. Good luck with your decision,P's i moved here 25years ago from mid wales and it feels more like home than home. all the best to you and your family

  4. Dundee!

  5. I have lived in Edinburgh and Dundee, and worked in Glasgow. Dundee is more of a really big town than a city. It has a very unique character. I do remember hearing it has the worst teenage pregnancy rate in the UK. Glasgow is very, very rough. So my recommendation would be Edinburgh. It is a beautiful place. Full of history. lots of things to do and see.

  6. I live in Glasgow and I really like the city.

I would suggest trying the west end or some of the suburbs in the North because there are a lot of schools in the north getting re-developed.

There are good educational facilities like the Mitchel library and some very good schools so check the schools records carefully so you can be sure your daughters get a good school to go to.

It has good parks and museums like the Kelvingrove art museum which is the most visited museum outside London.

There are good activities for children in Glasgow like the Xscape centre and Disco at BOHO for under 18's.

There are very good shops in Glasgow.

Hope you have a good time in Scotland in whatever city you choose.

  7. everywhere has its good and bad points depends where u are in each place im from Glasgow and its a really nice place with lots for the kids as long as you are in a nice area :)

  8. Don't let anyone convince you to go for Dundee. It has a huge drug problem and one of the highest teen pregnancy rates in Scotland.

    Note the following from Wikipedia:

Despite this economic growth the proportion of Dundee’s population whose lives are affected by poverty and who are classed as socially excluded is second only to Glasgow. Median weekly earnings were £409 in February 2006, an increase of 33% since 1998, on a par with the Scottish median.[34] Unemployment in 2006 was around 3.8%, higher than the Scottish average of 2.6%, although the city has “closed the gap” since 1996 when unemployment was 8.6% with the Scottish average at 6.1%. In 2000 the number of unemployed in the city had fallen to below 5,000 for the first time in over 25 years. Average house prices in Dundee have more than doubled since 1990 from an average of £42,475, to £102,025 in 2006.[36] Total house sales in the city have more than trebled since 1990 from £115,915,391 to £376,999,716 in 2004. House prices rose by over 15% between 2001–2002 and 2002–2003 and between 2005 and 2006 by 16.6%.[36]

Personally as a Scot, I would reccommend Glasgow. Like every city it has poor areas but it's a big city and home to many international companies. Edinburgh is good too but expensive to live in and is smaller than Glasgow.

Again note the following from Wikipedia:

Glasgow has the largest economy in Scotland and is at the hub of the metropolitan area of West Central Scotland. The city also has the third largest GDP Per Capita in the UK, after London and Edinburgh.[29] The city itself sustains more than 410,000 jobs in over 12,000 companies. Over 153,000 jobs have been created in the city since 2000 - a growth rate of 32%.[30] Glasgow's annual economic growth rate of 4.4% is now second only to that of London. In 2005 alone over 17,000 new jobs were created, and 2006 saw private-sector investment in the city reaching £4.2 billion pounds, an increase of 22% in a single year.[31] 55% of the residents in the Greater Glasgow area commute to the city every day. Once dominant manufacturing industries such as shipbuilding and heavy engineering have been gradually replaced in importance by a diversified economy.[32]

    Hope this helps

  9. I would go for Edinburgh but it can be expensive.  Glasgow is great to, depends on which area though, have you been given an idea of the areas you might be moving to.
