  1. good question, im in the same boat.

  2. Thats a good wage. Good neighborhoods: anywhere in the west end (Vancouver west) (I like Kitsilano, and im around your age). My advice, dont go to Burnaby or Surrey. They are cheaper, but ..........If you are looking for real estate I suggest this site: http://www.realtylink.org/

  3. Rent an apartment in the West End as close to Stanley Park as you can get.

  4. Yes, it's good, you'll live just fine, have no trouble paying for rent, a car, and some fun. Good, downtown, lively(mostly) neighbourhoods which might appeal to someone your age include Kitsilano, Kerrisdale, Granville Rise, Commercial Drive, the West End, Yaletown, Fairview, Main Street, False Creek. If you like things a little quieter and like easy access to parks and trails, North and West Vancouver are excellent for that, though West Van tends to roll up the sidewalks after 9 pm. All have a slightly different vibe but aren't all that far apart. It would be worth a weekend flight up to check them out if you intend to be here for any length of time, and you might want to see which is most convenient for your work.

  5. Vancouver is very costly....just 20 minutes away is Ladner if you like laid back, stay away from the northern areas of greater Vancouver....rainfall is outrageous.....South Surrey and White Rock are also areas to consider

  6. 70K is a great wage for the Vancouver area.  As for an area to reside you have to decide if you wish to commute or not as Vancouver is notorious for it's bad traffic due to lack of freeway systems within the city itself.  There are some beautiful communities such as Yaletown located on False Creek in downtown Vancouver but again, it all depends on where you will be working.

  7. Yes, 70K is good, but take home will be a lot less than what you're used to in CA.  Taxes are very high; your take home will be about 52-54K; housing in Vancouver is costly, and transportation (when BC transit's not on strike) can be very unreliable so you'll need a car.  Car insurance is high, because car theft is high (get a good alarm).  Gas currently is about $1.40 a liter which is about $5.50 a gallon.  Healthcare is good; just don't get anything really bad like cancer, because  the wait list may kill you, literally.  Speaking of strikes, BC is very pro-union so at any given time, you can have a newspaper, taxi, doctors, nurses, garbage, transit and/or teachers strike.  About the only profession that won't are lawyers.  Still, the people are awesome, the city vibrant and generally safe and the scenery unbelievable, plus you're in Olympic city so people will be envying you or calling you for a place to live for a couple of weeks in Feb 2010...

  8. I'm actually doing the same thing - 29 year old female moving from the States.  I just found a place at the corner of Yaletown off of Richards and overlooking False Creek.  It's a bit more than I wanted to spend, but I'm really happy with the area.  I've heard it's a great place to be.

  9. Its cheaper in Burnaby  . But you may enjoy the west end  . Not that it matters to me but a large  g*y population  .. Kitsalno is nice  .Stay away from the east side money not a problem  Bus passes are tax deductable  and good service
